TCM treatment of diabetic kidney disease with modified Shenzhuo formula


A case report published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine described a case of an individual with diabetic kidney disease who regularly received treatment Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for seven years.

  • Diabetic kidney disease, one of the most common microvascular complications of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes, is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), accounting for nearly 50 percent of cases.
  • Moreover, ESRD as a result of diabetic kidney disease is often linked to cardiovascular disease.
  • Currently, the clinical treatment available for the disease is primarily focused on controlling blood sugar level and lowering blood pressure and urine protein, and often have side effects.
  • The case report looked at a 72-year-old woman diagnosed with diabetic kidney disease.
  • Because of the disease, she experienced several complications such as fatigue, cold sensation in the lower extremities, convulsion of the lower limbs, and frequent urination at night.
  • Moreover, she had a dark purple tongue with white and yellow fur and sublingual varices.
  • Examinations showed that her fasting blood glucose was 5.7 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), serum creatinine 159 micromole per liter (μmol/L), blood urea nitrogen 13.6 μmol/L, blood uric acid 493 picomole per liter (pmol/L), and blood pressure 138/65 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
  • She later received TCM treatment of the modified Shenzhuo formula, Dahuan, Shuizhi, and Danshen for seven years.
  • The TCM treatment improved her condition.

In conclusion, the case report showed that TCM with the modified Shenzhuo formula may be used as an alternative treatment for diabetic kidney disease.
